Bold Romantic Gardens by Wolfgang Oehme & James van Sweden

Bold Romantic Gardens documents the work of landscape architects Wolfgang Oehme and James van Sweden.  Their firm is widely credited with introducing more perennials and ornamental grasses into the American garden.  By using a wide variety of plant material and creating bold, painterly massings of plants,  the partners have helped redefine American gardens.  The firm's work in the Washington, D.C. area has been highly influential in bringing more naturalistic plantings to American gardens.  While their gardens do have well-designed hardscape elements, the power of the planting takes center stage.  This is one of the first books to document the firm's work and only covers the firm's built work through the late 1980's.  I strongly recommend reading this book to get a better understanding of the role of plants in landscape architecture.
