Charleston-Inspired Courtyard

Urban Retreat
I have always been fascinated by creating compelling small spaces.  Every detail must be perfect and the space plan need to be functional.  Charleston, South Carolina's famous courtyard gardens inspired this contemporary example. The space is small and heavily detailed.  Romantic dinners can be enjoyed on the dining terrace next to the house.  Larger gatherings can spill out onto the formal lawn.  A water feature accents the far wall and serves as a focal point while generating pleasing white noise of the water to screen urban noise.  A pair of ornate wood benches provide additonal seating and provide sculptural accents.  Planing accents the architectural nature of the space while providing bold forms and intriguing shadows.  The end result is a functional and aesthetic small garden that harkens back to some of this country's most cherished urban retreats.
